Riders for Health, Safety, and Dignity
Overview
The BodaCare Program, spearheaded by Centrumberliner Medical Centre (CBMC), is a community-driven initiative that partners with boda boda riders to improve healthcare access, safeguard women and girls from GBV risks, and deliver healthcare and dignity kits to underserved communities.
- Beyond transport, boda riders are trained as health ambassadors who:
- Promote positive health-seeking behaviors.
- Advocate for safe deliveries under professional healthcare workers.
- Provide earlier response to emergencies, including accidents, obstetric complications, and referrals to hospitals.
- This integration of mobility, dignity, and emergency care ensures that no woman, girl, or community member is left behind.
Objectives
- Improve emergency response times for accidents, maternal complications, and urgent hospital referrals.
- Encourage facility-based deliveries and regular antenatal care.
- Foster positive health-seeking behavior through trusted rider ambassadors.
- Ensure equitable delivery of dignity kits and supplies in hard-to-reach areas.
- Reduce GBV risks during travel by creating safe rider networks.
Key Interventions
- Emergency Response Training: Riders trained in first aid, accident response, and emergency referrals.
- Safe Maternal Transport: Riders on-call for expectant mothers needing antenatal, delivery, or postnatal transport.
- Health Promotion: Riders spread messages on SRHR, child immunization, GBV prevention, and hospital care.
- Dignity Kits Delivery: Riders deliver essential dignity kits and medical supplies to schools and communities.
- Community Partnerships: Linking riders with hospitals, police, and local leaders for coordinated emergency and maternal care.
Impact Vision (By 2027)
- 5,000 trained boda riders certified in emergency response and health promotion.
- 500,000 women and girls benefiting from dignity kits, safe transport, and hospital referrals.
- 70% of pregnant women in target areas using facility-based deliveries.
- Significant reduction in maternal mortality and road accident deaths through faster emergency response.
Why It Matters
In rural Kenya, a boda ride can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency. Delayed response to accidents or maternal complications contributes heavily to preventable deaths. The BodaCare Program transforms everyday riders into lifesavers and dignity protectors, ensuring safer communities and healthier futures.
